Royal Racing 2013 – First Look
After seeing the goods at Crankworx this year I knew there were a couple of bits on my must-have list…
First up is the Cutter Shirt. Originally due to drop in 2012 , Royal held it back to get it just right as they weren’t happy with the samples. Finally out in 2013 is billed as “perfect if you’re trail building and riding all in the same day”. Happily this is something I get to do quite a bit of in my spare time, and sticking the shirt/jacket/hoody on it was apparent this was going to get some heavy use. The heavy cotton has a DWR water resistant coating to keep the damp out – obviously it won’t stand up to a proper British downpour but it will certainly take the edge off a murky woods. Custom press studs (because they are Rad according to Tav at Royal) hold the plaid colour scheme hut across your chest, and there is also a hood to conceal your identity in shopping centres, or perhaps keep your head warmer. Well cut, agreeable styling and practical. I like it a lot.

Royal have cunningly organised their 2013 line-up into Gear Sets, and pair the Cutter with the Domain Shorts. These are also available in a full length pant (they mean trousers!). Styled to look like your favourite jeans, with a denim look to the fabric and similar pocket stylings they look great. They are also nice and baggy, great for freedom of movement as well as getting kneepads on. Little leather trims complete the rather effective jeans look. A double snap waist and the option to use a belt or the internal adjusters adds choice as well. The real revelation is that these bad-boys are waterproof! (10,000 DPI for those that are counting) Just how waterproof remains to be seen, but another sharp looking bit of kit for riders who want the technical features of a great trail short, but with a mid 90s street styling. Again, an instant favourite.
