Small Suggestion Reference Race Start Times?
« on: Dec 02, 2012, 21:34 »
Hi Chris, Marshalls, Anyone else who it concerns etc
Firstly Many Thanks for a great race and organistaion that made today great fun and a great end to the season, ;)

I dont wish to moan but just putting it out there really as Jan, feb when the others are due to take place are going to be similar, Now being winter we obviously dont have to much day light and second runs for anyone near the end of the racing which included myself in Pro Am was not the best in the top woods where it was a struggle to see some of the roots etc due to the darkness so Im just wondering if theres anychance to have the lunch break Shortened if having it atall?
Now dont get me wrong I totally understand the Marshalls need a break and hot food as if it wasnt for them volenteering we probably would not be racing but it was dark for the last guys and that didnt factor in if there were to be a course closure for any reason,

Many Thanks Thought I would put it on here for any other feedback, like I Said I dont mean to moan and worst case Ill just eat more Carrots, :)

Hi Ben,
yes take your point, its always a balancing act in December with the times.

We did spray all roots yellow last year but a lot of riders complained it made it worst because they could to see them all!

The lunch break is in the schedule to allow for a short break and also builds us a safe cushion, so if we have any crashes in the morning which causes delays then we have some spare time to where we can make up what we lost.

We always monitor and discuss with the British Cycling Commissionaire what is happening during the day with weather and light conditions and will adjust the lunch break accordingly to suit the conditions.

January and February will have more light at the end of the day.

We have looked at just making it one race run and extending practice times, such has 9am to 12.30am and start racing 1 run at 1pm with 30 second gaps but i think people like have the 2 runs just in case they screw up the first run.

Im sure riders would be happy to pay £30 for one race run or would it be just £15?

Given the earlier onset of darkness in Dec could a different track not be used?

The current format works well IMO.

And the reduction in light was the same for everyone within the category they raced...

And as Chris said come January/February there will be more light due to the Winter Equinox ;)

hmm no, the amount of runs has no effect on the cost, the medics, forestry commission, Dean Trail Volunteers, marshals etc are there for one day and want paying for a day on half a day. sorry

Surely then for the cost of one run £30 is too expensive?

Would it not be easier to start the timing earlier so to avoid darkness in the woods towards the end of the day and riders getting 2 runs?

Is there really any need for a lunch break when its only the marshalls that need the break? They could be taken hot food or a shift system, riders dont need it as they spend roughly 3-4 hours between runs so plenty of time to eat for them.

two reasons for the lunch break.

1) Toilet, food and drink break for the marshals. we do deliver food and drink to them but they still need a break and time to eat and drink.

2) The lunch break is also built into the day to give us some spare time if we need to use it, if we have crash of any stoppages during the morning we use some of the lunch break to get back on time.
