Grip Magazine?
« on: Jan 10, 2012, 21:57 »
Yo, if anyone has any copies of Grip Magazine that they would be willing to part with I will gladly take them off your hands. It was the magazine Jerry Dyer started after he left Dirt and it only lasted for about six issues I think, I used to own the first issue but it seems to have gone walkabout/been chucked out and I'd be really keen to get hold of the set, as i remember it was awesome, I think Troy Lee can be seen reading a copy of it in the credits of Sprung 3, which was also awesome.

What the hell happened to Jerry? I used to work for him on Dirt in the early days of the Mag. I haven't heard from him in years.

(sorry, hijacking your thread - I did have 2 issues of grip (2 and 3 I think). If I can find them you can have them)

There was a full set (4 issues) on ebay recently and I don't think they sold.  Think the guy posted on here too - worth doing a search. . . . .

someone told me they spotted jerry dyer at porc a couple of years ago, previous to that he was spotted on an american tv dating show where he was matched up with a porn actress, bit of a shock to see him on there but it was definitely him as the jacket with shift written across the back and the bleached hair was a giveaway .

Bloody hell Jerry Dyer .. I remember him trying to sell me his invention "pro-fresh" (a tube attached to your waterbottle, & hooked onto your bars I think) back in 1995 at the Malverns hills classic. (well, it wasn't a Classic, there were full-scale bottle riots, certain people climbing marqee poles naked & a young lad getting stabbed to death near our tent.

I digress, (sorry) I also have some copies of Grip, somewhere .. I spose' Jerry was a bit of legend, setting up Dirtmag! :)

Yes. His name was Alex Pinkleton, if I remember rightly. We woke up, & our tent was surrounded by police tape, I took a photo, & had the camera taken from me.

The problem was, over the years, the chav/townie pricks (keep in mind this is WAY before "chav" was invented!) got to know about the festival & would pretty gate-crash it, & start hellfire. & in 95' it kicked off, although, I'm sure there were bikers involved. The Sundays racing was cancelled & I'm certain that was the last Malvern Hills Classic.

I think back then, for most, downhill was so new, that simply being part of a new (rad) sport was enough reason to go out & get wasted. This was the days when tattoos were only seen on old blokes, everybody had chain wallets, ROX was awesome, & if your bike didn't have a DCD your bike was very noisy.

I had no idea that happened. I remember camping at the Motocross GP at Foxhill in Swindon. I think it was 1997 and I was about 13. On Saturday night the partying turned to riots which resulted in Riot Police, Helicopters, Police Dogs, numerous stabbings, fires, thefts. Basically just complete mindlessness and anarchy.

I was terrified. Not nice and not good for the sport.

Foxhills ! I remember going there ! David Vuilemen kicking ass at the Des-Nations :)

Can't imagine the riots there blimey! although that Malverns was pretty bad. We were stood on the edge, about 10ft away, & were side-stepping bottles coming from the sky!

I glad these days its ALL about the riding/racing  ;D
