Title: Post a pic of your Van
Post by: [Rob] on Nov 28, 2010, 21:08
Seems fitting on a forum full of riders with Vans.

I recently got myself a Mk6 Transit.  Now looking at converting the back out a bit with a power supply and bed.

Post up your conversions as well.

I've just got my snow tyres fitted to my van on my winter wheels - steels painted with hammerite smooth black. Looks good from a distance!

The van is a T5. And I am in love with it.  :-[

Yeah Al and Rob
Just got it re-mapped the other week to 160bhp and 248lb/ft and will be blanking the EGR valve off tomora. Got some plans for my T5 over winter:
FK Coilovers (ordered)
Some whore'ish wheels or may get the spare set of steel's I have banded
Intake mod's, Forge FMIC and de-cat (mapper will ajust map after to for me, woot)
Colour coding
Sportline front splitter and spoiler, Caravelle mouth mod and smooth all the gaps out
Front fogs

All I can think off off the top of my head. Some reason I cant find pics but its a Red T5 with black wheels and awning atm

Pretty much what I have planned for the Winter too, some remapping to come once all the sanity checks are done! Got the Velle bumper ready and someone who has made the Sportline splitter for a fraction of the cost, then off to the spray shop.

How much are the FK Coilovers, I was looking at the V-Maxx set from MerseySpeed, seem to get pretty good write ups.

Thats a fair bit of oomph out of the 1.9. Has it brought the engine speed down for road speed? I remember my old 1.9 used to be at about 3000rpm for 80.

Fair play with spending all that dolla on it, loads of stuff like. I'd love to be able to get caravelle bumpers, colour coded and lowered a little bit (30 - 40 mm) but it's all money i need to be spending on other stuff like skis and bikes and food and diesel.

Alright Tom? Got the coilovers through Awesome GTI, they are doing deals on them atm. Merseyspeed dont have the V-Maxx till Jan the earliest and T4R'US havent got them in either the last time I spoke to them before they went on holiday. Mainly going with FK as they go down 100mm :D

Yeah Al it is but apparently its the PD130 unit and gearbox that is factory detuned, so its reet. Still 3k for 80mph but you dont have to rev the ball out of it now to get there.
Been looking into fitting a 6speed box as in therory it should bolt on but im going to have to look into that.

Post by: Back Pedal on Dec 03, 2010, 19:20
Bloody hell man, after all the £££ it'll take to put a 6 speed box on there you might have been better off buying the 2.5 engine!!

Title: Re: Post a pic of your Van
Post by: Back Pedal on Dec 03, 2010, 22:31
Yeah I'm good. In France still - the ski season starts tomorrow so dead stoked.

As for the 1.9 vs the 2.5....

On my old 1.9 (104 horses) I had to have a new flywheel at 70k and a new gear box at 86k (5 gear stripped out whilst cruising on the motorway!) and had to have the drive shafts replaced because they were knocking.

I bought the 2.5 (174 horses, seen in the pics above) in April and so far so good. Although milage is a lot lower, so only time will tell. But my god it flies. Family cars can say bye bye and most chavs or neds (unless they got the sport version of their chosen steed) aint got a chance in hell. I'm not one for racing the traffic light GP but more for embarrassing idiots that are so desperate to get past you (because you are in a van) on hills on motorways. Pull into the slow lane and accelerate and watch them look in puzzlement why they can't get past the naughty 'slow' van. Although that is very naughty and I only do it if someone is being a reet c0ck like tail gating the crap out of you or being agro. If not I love sitting in the slow lane in 6th gear, the van (just shy of 2 tons unladen) sits at a staggering 1600rpm at 60 mph!!

I bet your 1.9 is pretty nippy mind. I'd have thought with 160 odd horses it'd give the 2.5 a run for it's money because the 1.9 block is quite a bit lighter... until the she runs out of oomph and the extra cylinder gets the 2 tons way past a ton easily!

I've been told (although never tried) that they are limited to an indicated 125mph (117 actual) because of the speed rating on the tyres. I was also told by the same source that the 174 is only at 3500rpm when on the speed limiter - a full 1000rpm away from where the red line actually starts.

Dear god, I am boring.  ;D
Title: Re: Post a pic of your Van
Post by: Daddy Snoops on Dec 05, 2010, 11:46
Yeah I wanted a 174 but just couldnt afford it, or a 4 motion one. But yeah iv seen a few sportlines beasting it around and they are quick.
Had a look yest and 60mph is 2.1k. It gets over a ton now still pulling pretty hard but it runs out of gearbox, wouldnt mind knowing what it would get with another gear tho.
Get it mapped dude! and blank the EGR vavle off big time!

Yeah I know all about the EGR valve block and it is on my to do list. I just need to either order one or get one made up.

I sometimes wish I'd bought a 4 motion one for out in France, the advantages would be massive in the snow, although I've heard they get about 450 miles / 80 liters of diesel!! Not exactly ideal.

Lets see some pics of your giant red van then!

Alex what sort of mpg do you get out of yours? it would be nice to know a real world figure and not the vw quoted 44mpg
Title: Re: Post a pic of your Van
Post by: Back Pedal on Dec 05, 2010, 16:09
I average about 32/33 mpg with mixed town and motorway driving giving it some welly every now and again.

I tried to sit at 60 on the dot on my way to France the last time and did about 300 miles before I got bored and did the rest at 80 ish but could have done calais - morzine (550 miles) on one tank (80 liters) with a bit left over making it about 35 - 37 mpg at these speeds. I just didn't want to take the risk because it was around the time when the french were on strike and there was no fuel in the country so I made sure I had enough!

I think it would be very plausible to get 44 mpg if you drove like a saint, although nigh on impossible!!

They definatly arn't limited (in terms of a limiter - maybe power). On the way to Morzine a few years ago we tried to see how fast the one we had would go (174 SWB) & it was knocking on 126 on the GPS down a particulary long hill with the mirrors folded in. Pretty scary though.

I should put some pictures of ours up, but from the outside it just looks like a white T5 LWB with an awning on the side. Its only basic inside with a garage box for up to 5 bikes & storage for all the camping/awning stuff with overbox storage & the front is the everything else area.

Would like to get a Reimo pop up roof to sleep in, window the front half & put a mini kitchen in it, but other things need money spending on first, like proper houses...

Ill get a pic up tomora Al, just its normal atm. Hope to have the coilovers here and fitted next week.

-C- Iv been looking at a Reimo pop up roof to, there is someone that makes his own in Newcastle that are ment to be pretty good. Would open so much more room in my van because its a mission sleeping in mine with all the stuff in for racing. Got the van thinking it would be more than big enough but kind of wish I would have gone for a LWB Transporter or even a SWB Crafter!

As for tyres I bought some of the Goodyear Cargo Marathons back in september and was very impressed with their grip and road noise. They have more bands going across the tyre, not just around so break and accelerate better!

Go easy on your drive shafts buddy - they wont last long if you're spinning up to 3rd!!!

€69 a corner. 102 load rated (enough for my gross vehicle weight of 2800kg) and with the snow flake rating.

I am very very impressed with them. They are grippy as hell.

From 123pneu.fr/mytyres.co.uk

They are these ones:

Although now it seems winter has properly started they've gone up to €123!!!

UK equivalent:

This is correct, though it's 118 I think.  Maybe it was me that told you? :)  I've verified it - very noticable how it'll "thud" into the limiter if you're going downhill with a following wind!

3500rpm is about right too, as you can work out with simple maths from your 1600/60mph (that's a bit low I think - more like 1800 maybe? Mine is 3000/~100mph).

If yours has been chipped (possibly by a previous owner) it's common to have the limiter removed at the same time, potentially without you even being informed that it had one beforehand.  Mine's definitely limited, no question.

I'm building a bed in the back on mine similar to yours, planning to hold tool box, speakers and battery under it. What did you use for a mattress? Most cheap mattresses i can find come up 3foot wide which is much wider than im after.  Been looking around for some sort of foam i can cut but haven't come up with anything yet.

What are you building on the left hand side?

Its got everything we need to make any journey a pleasure; ceiling mounted drop down dvd player, dash fitted dvd player, digital tv and audio, roof bars, tow bar, major insulation, van-x blinds all around and most importantly chrome side rails  ;) Oh and a rock'n'roll bed! ;D

Needs to be hit with the lowering stick a little and maybe some A4 style headlights  ;)

Very nice mcroy. The hosting sit you're using doesn't allow embedding, try photobucket/imageshack/flickr etc

hopefully by this summer should be something along the lines of this

back seats fold flat to form bed and base folds out to be double the width just got to weld up the frame and check with dvla

I think iv seen your van before. You on the transit forum? Ex RAC?

I'm building a bed in the back on mine similar to yours, planning to hold tool box, speakers and battery under it. What did you use for a mattress? Most cheap mattresses i can find come up 3foot wide which is much wider than im after.  Been looking around for some sort of foam i can cut but haven't come up with anything yet.

What are you building on the left hand side?
yer its been on the transit forum :)
left hand side is shelf's and stove grill combo got small cupboards sorted and a clever hinged pivot so i can kick the stove out and round so its out the van when the weather's nice
nearly got the alpine unit in now with dvd changer, ipod hook up and a DAB receivers and a nicely sized 4 channel amp and a separate amp for a sub just waiting for another set of 6X9's, some tweeters, a set of 4 inch round mid tones and some noise damping for the doors and fire wall. i don't think Ive got any spare space in the dash any more :/ but is sounds amazing so who cares?

does anyone know somewhere that makes up headlights? I'm after something considerable brighter and hopefully a bit nicer to look at (halo or a propper HID conversion). i was going to get some of a land rover discovery at a local scrap yard then pull them apart and rebuild them into the shape of the transit using the same front lens but anyone know a easier way?
cheers

The fitment of them wheels is Amazingly good! I have to say i am very impressed by it.

i just showed it to my house mate who is after one and he is also very impressed!

It doesnt look like its low enough to cause that many problems either which is a huge bonus!

Hi all, Here is my van, picked her up last year and love it, makes a weekend riding so much easier. Its purely for moving bikes and kit. As both me and the missis ride it seemed an obvious choice.
I upgraded from a nissan 350z which as you can imagine was a logistical nightmare with a bike, I could fit my hardtail in the passenger seat with the wheels in the boot.
Wanted a transporter but it seemed you were paying a premium for the name, so opted for a vito as i could get a similar spec for a few grand cheaper.
I have built a storage stand that i can stand 3 bikes in and with a ratchet strap around the wheels, they ain't moving.
Tempted with a remap at some point but it's just the cost. It's the 150bhp 2.2 diesel and i love it.

Just a question, I notice a lot of vans these days have alloys but surely low profile tyres have an effect on the safe load carrying capability due to the lower (or unrated) load index?  :-\

Some go for style above safety but you can get plenty of tyres on alloys that are correctly load weighted for the van.  Plenty don't but if PC Plod inspects your van he can legally impound your motor and issue a failure notice,  should also be picked up on the MOT if they're on the ball.

Took the Berlingay on its first trip on Thursday, chugs along nicely and is proving very cheap to run.

Should have some time off in November, to clean it up and do a micro-camper conversion.

Can any of you Transporter T4 people recommend any decent(ish) dash speakers? Standard ones are amazingly bad so the plan is to change them. Anything under about 50 quid, pretty sure they're a 4" speaker? Or so i've been told anyway! Cheers :)

Have a look on ebay. I think they have 115 watt Pioneers on there for about £20.

Haha.  True.  Although this is a newer one which isn't prone to the problem like the older trafics.

Going to be doing a few things to it, first up is a window tint, graphics and stereo stuff. Then its getting a re map and some new wheels.

Not quite as nice as your one Alex.  But it's a 115 and it's been chipped, goes some!

Having it serviced today, then new stereo and speakers going in before Eurobike.  When I get back a little bit of body work then getting some graphics made up and lowering it a little.

Don't have anything to go by. It already has an Alpine headunit and some 6x9s in the back. One of the component speakers in the front doesn't work so replacing them and putting some better 6x9's in the back. Also got an Alpine double din to go in.

Top tip: get your rear brakes fully checked out at the service. Turns out they can seize if they aren't getting daily abuse. New rear rotors, full set of pads, system bleed and labour £300 at my local place.

Use mine most days so should be good i hope, had them checked out at recent MOT.  Just had a wiring issue actually.  The loom leading to the injectors was coming apart, meant I had random engine cut outs with no warning!

Talking of the MOT... TYRE FAIL.

A 2013 Caddy. This one has the Blue motion engine, it sucks, so slow.
