Saracen Ariel 2012 and coil shocks
« on: Feb 29, 2012, 09:38 »
New 2012 Ariel is looking gurt sexy however, if it doesn't take a coil shock like the older one, its not for me.
Anyone know if it does now?

I'm afraid the 16x will only take an air shock.

All air shoxs will fit including ones with a piggy back, although it may get a bit tight on the 15 inch frame.

Cheers

Really?

Not to start disagreeing with a man very obviously in the know, but surely a piggyback could be squeezed in there?

Failing that what about a non-piggyback shock say an old Van R?

Or are madison just not keen on coil shocks getting fitted to this frame?

It isnt the piggy back which is the problem, its the coil being to wide.

Yeah, I've not seen a frame close up, but surely a custom linkage may be an option to allow a bit of room?
Its a shame as I love that frame but really prefer the feel of a coil shock when DH'ing.

Nope I see it now ::)

The linkage comes in a bit too close to the shock body...

Duh! should have listened eh....

Not tempted by the ccdb air or bos void, or is it really coil or nothing?

Not sure. I just think coil feels better for more sustained demanding riding, plus I've already got one to fit.
Maybe An air ccdb would be ok though. I hate to say it but, I also just prefer the look of a coil. Air shocks make the bike look a bit........... Xc jeyer.....  :-)

I'll have a chat with the designer and see if I can find out why they went for air over coil.

Just also to point out that Saracen, although an in-house Madison brand, sort out everything themselves, from design through to spec :)

You sure on that? Simon told me very definitely that the 16X would take a coil.

I'll double check with Si, but Andy seems very certain.

Could maybe squeeze and old fox in there, the ones that used the narrow springs? But then, brand new frame with around a 9-10yr old shock...what's the point?!

Interesting they allowed the design to limit the use of an air shock though, they certainly arn't everyones cup a' tea
